Motorists turning to electric cars

A survey of British drivers by car insurance company esure has found that almost three quarters (71%)of UK motorists would consider driving an electric car. The poll also shows that high fuel prices and the economic downturn are combining to change motorists' attitudes, with nearly one fifth thinking about changing their car for a more efficient model.

The survey also suggests that younger drivers are most receptive to the idea of electric, hybrid or bio-fuel cars; some 81 per cent of people under 25 saying they would contemplate driving an electric car. It is thought that as well as environmental concerns the prospect of cheaper motoring free from rising petrol prices, congestion charges, road taxes is part of the appeal of alternative-fuelled cars for younger motorists.

Mike Pickard, Head of Risk and Underwriting at esure car insurance, said, “With the growing cost of motoring and the pressure of having a greener lifestyle, many motorists are considering alternatives and the electric car is an attractive option. It is very cheap to run and you'll never be stung at the petrol pump again.”
