Motorists prioritise fuel economy over emissions, says survey

Fuel economy remains the highest priority for the majority (71%) of car buyers choosing their next car, according to a new survey by Auto Trader. The report indicates, however, that carbon emissions are an increasing concern for British motorists with 53% suggesting that CO2 is a significant issue for them when buying.

Commenting on the report, Nathan Coe, group director Auto Trader, said: ‘It’s not just today’s concerns about the availability of fuel that is driving motorists to prioritise fuel economy when choosing a new car. Increases in fuel prices and the growing pressure on family budgets over the past three years are all having an impact. The survey also reveals that the number of motorists who consider low emissions to be a priority has almost doubled and we expect that number to continue to increase in the next few years."

Younger motorists, aged 17-24, are the age group least concerned about saving money with 65% saying that they didn't think about fuel economy when choosing their current vehicle and 58% saying that they won't consider it when they look for a new car.

The survey also highlighted that increasing numbers of drivers are turning to diesel cars over petrol powered vehicles. Of those who switched to diesel cars 58% claim that the main reason was running costs.
