The SMMT's 6th annual Sustainability Report highlights areas in which the Motor Industry has made progress in environmental performance. Towards Sustainability 2005 reports progress in average new car fuel economy and in the amount of energy used in vehicle production.

Since 2001, energy used in manufacture has almost halved, from 4.3 to 2.5 MWh. In the same period, water use has dropped from 6.2 to 3.4 m3 per vehicle.

The report confirms the small fall in CO2 emissions from new cars in 2004. In 2004, the average new car emitted 171.4 g/km, a 0.7g/km improvement on 2004, and a decline from 189.9g/km in 1997.

SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan said: "As well as making real progress towards sustainable mobility, it is important that we are absolutely transparent about where we are succeeding and where improvements have to be made."
