A survey of motorists by the Environmental Transport Association (ETA) has shown that 65 per cent of British drivers are still unaware how much CO2 is produced by the car they drive.

Drivers living in the south of the country were the least aware and these were particularly concentrated in London with 68 per cent not knowing the CO2 figure for their car. In Scotland the figure was 56 per cent, with 64 per cent in the north of England also being unaware of their own car's CO2 figure.

ETA director, Andrew Davis, said: "The debate about emissions and climate change moves on, but the results of our survey show it may be leaving people behind - awareness of the CO2 produced by cars is incredibly low."

The survey also found that 33 per cent of drivers in London do not feel that their car produces an unreasonable amount of pollution, a figure which drops to 25 per cent in Wales, the Midlands and the North. The figure for the south of England is 32 per cent.  According to the survey, only 5% of British drivers are able to say precisely how much CO2 is produced by the car they drive, and 11 per cent have only a rough idea. A further 11 per cent know which emissions-based VED band applies to their vehicle.
