More hybrid vehicle models on the way

More energy saving hybrid vehicles are to be marketed in 2005 as manufacturers move to introduce the innovative technology pioneered by Toyota and Honda.

Ford are to offer the first commercially available hybrid SUV - the Escape - in the US, while Toyota will extend technology introduced in the Prius to the Highlander and and Lexus RX400 SUV.

Honda will be offering a hybrid version of the Accord in the US in 2005 and  hybrid pickup trucks are also available there from General Motors, who offer the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra to a limited number of fleet and commercial operators in selected areas.

A hybrid version of the Nissan Almera Tino will also go on sale in Japan this year.
