Tesco has become the first supermarket in Northern Ireland to deploy a fleet of Modec battery powered zero-emission home delivery vans. Meanwhile, Iveco has launched one new hybrid van and another model with a fully electric drive.

The Modec vans first were introduced in 2007 at Tesco's Shrewsbury depot as part of a pilot scheme to assess their suitability for home delivery use. The newly purchased vans, which will operate out of the Tesco store at Newtownbreda, run solely on electricity. Each Modec van has a range of 100 miles and a maximum speed of 50mph.

Maxine Thelwell, TescoNI.com manager said: “We listened to our customers when they told us they are becoming more concerned about the environment. By introducing the new Modec delivery van, we aim to reduce the level of CO2 emission, thus helping to contribute to a low-carbon society. Not only are the new vans carbon neutral and pollution free they are also very quiet — a double benefit for urban environments."

In related news , Italian van and truck manufacturer Iveco has launched two new vans aimed at cutting greenhouse gas emissions at the IAA commercial vehicle show in Hanover in October: the medium-duty Iveco Eurocargo Hybrid which claims to deliver a 30% fuel saving compared with its diesel-only equivalent. The Daily Electric 35S model has an all-electric drive and is designed specifically for urban use. The Daily Electric has a reported range of up to 120km.
