Modec, the electric vehicle manufacturer, has opened its new production plant in Binley, Coventry and annouced advanced orders for its battery-powered delivery vehicles from Tesco and other organisations. Meanwhile Cenex - the centre of excellence for low carbon and fuel cell technologies - has announced a project to support Modec in order to accelerate the production and roll-out of demonstration vehicles in London.

Modec says that it has already attracted orders for over 100 of its electric trucks from Tesco, PF Whitehead, Hildon Water, Islington Borough Council, Speedhire and Transport for London, amongst other organisations. Around 500 Modec vehicles are expected to be produced in the first year.

Speaking about the support for Modec, Robert Evans Cenex's CEO said: “This pilot will help validate the proposition that the low carbon vehicle technologies can meet or exceed customer’s operational requirements whilst simultaneously delivering big gains in environmental performance."
