MINI E UK has invited British drivers based in the South East to participate in field trials by leasing one of 20 electric MINI prototypes. The MINI E is an all electric vehicle powered by the latest generation of lithium-ion battery technology.

Each MINI E is to be made available to lease for six month from December 2009. A second round of applications will then be invited in 2010, allowing a further twenty drivers to lease an all-electric MINI for a six month period.

The monthly lease fee for the MINI E cars involved in the trials will be £330 per month (normally £550 per month) thanks to the BMW group being successful in a bid for a £25m fund from the Technology Strategy Board.  The MINI E driver will for the electricity used.

MINI is teaming up with Oxford Brookes University who will be the academic partner in the trials. Research participants will be asked to provide detailed feedback to the research team. Vehicles in the trials will be fitted with a data-logging device to allow researchers to assess how much power the MINE E is using or how far people generally drive.
