LowCVP workshop to focus on cutting emissions from commercial vehicles

The LowCVP is holding a stakeholder workshop on Friday December 2nd to discuss current and future initiatives to cut emissions from commercial vehicles. The workshop is intended to be a precursor to the re-establishment of a LowCVP CV working group which will take forward initiatives for greening the UK's truck fleet.
The commercial vehicle sector is contributing a growing proportion of the CO2 and polluting emissions emitted by road transport and has been relatively neglected compared, for example, with the focus on passenger cars.
The LowCVP has carried out various initiatives relating to commercial vehicles in recent years. In 2010 the Partnership, with DfT and other stakeholders identified the need for a scheme to provide confidence to operators that after-market, low carbon/fuel efficiency aids would deliver savings in real-world conditions.
In 2012 the LowCVP published a report proposing an independent accreditation scheme to unlock the potential for significant uptake of retrofit technologies to cut emissions from the existing fleet of HGVs.
Over the last few years a group within the European Commission has been working on methods to report on and, potentially, legislate to reduce CO2 from HDVs. In 2014, OLEV part-funding allowed the LowCVP and its members to develop a solution for the UK which links with the EU's work, but aims to “unlock” the market in the near term.

The LowCVP-led project has developed an accurate, reproducible and representative procedure for measuring the operations of trucks and vans used for carrying freight. The procedure enables equipment manufacturers or vehicle operators to conduct robust, repeatable and reliable tests to validate the impact on fuel consumption and emissions of retrofit technology – such as low rolling resistance tyres and aerodynamic additions, or engine efficiency technology - under a range of representative operating conditions.
The new group will work closely with the Department for Transport and
TfL's LoCITY initiative and will feed into the Low Carbon HGV Taskforce.
