LowCVP working with Government to encourage low carbon van procurement

The LowCVP is working with the Government in the development of plans for a programme aimed at the procurement of innovative, low carbon vehicles for use in public sector fleets. The Government has committed an initial £20m to the programme which aims to harness the public sector's purchasing power to accelerate the introduction of cleaner vehicle technologies.

The initial phase of the programme will focus on the procurement of lower carbon vans as there is thought to be considerable scope for carbon gains in this sector. The LowCVP is facilitating stakeholder discussions with the UK van industry to identify the quickest and most effective ways of bringing low carbon vans to market using the leverage provided by the Government's public procurement programme.

The programme's objective is that initial procurements of lower carbon vehicles should lead to larger future orders, at reduced additional cost - helping to stimulate full market introduction of lower carbon options.

The Government says that providing there is a successful initial implementation of the programme, there will be provision to extend funding by up to an additional £30million.
