The LowCVP is seeking expressions of interest and engagement from stakeholders in the UK coach industry who are interested in forming an 'interest group' that - under LowCVP's auspices - will work together to address common challenges in cutting both carbon and locally polluting emissions from the coach sector.

At the recent Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT) Coaching Event 2018, Dan Hayes, head of LowCVP's Bus Working Group, announced that the LowCVP is actively looking to support the coach industry in its future plans and to help it to adapt to the challenges currently facing operators such as the introduction of London's Ultra Low Emission Zone and Clean Air Zones in other authority areas. The LowCVP will also be working with stakeholders to develop a longer term vision for decarbonisation of the sector, including the adoption of low carbon fuels and vehicle technologies

The LowCVP's Bus Working Group has worked closely with Department for Transport bus team and the Joint Air Quality Unit (JAQU) over the last decade to create grant funding schemes such as the Low Emission Bus Scheme and the Clean Bus Technology Fund. The work has contributed to the uptake of over 6,000 Low Carbon Emission Buses and the introduction of the BSOG LCEB incentive. The LowCVP intends that the knowledge gained through close working with the bus industry can be transferred and applied to the UK's coach sector.

The provisional aims of the group are to:

  • Understand the current UK coach make impact on greenhouse gas emissions and air quality
  • Assess the potential for government support for coach retrofit solutions, particularly to tackle pollution
  • Define an 'Ultra Low Emission Coach'
  • Develop an 'Ultra Low Emission Coach Scheme' along the lines of the ULEV Scheme

To kick-start discussions and assess interest in the groups actives, LowCVP will be hosting a workshop in Q1 2019.

If you would like to be part of these discussions and participate in the workshop, please register your interest for: the LowCVP coach interest group at the Low Emission Coach Hub here.
