In its response to the Department for Transport's Advanced Fuels Call for Evidence, the LowCVP says that Government will need to support the deployment of a range of advanced fuels if the road transport sector is to play a full role in achieving the UK’s 2050 CO2 targets. The LowCVP submission was prepared following extensive consultation with Partnership stakeholders.

The LowCVP response says that delivering CO2 reductions from road transport will require both improved vehicle efficiency and significantly reduced carbon intensity of fuels. Advanced liquid fuels and, in particular, advanced biofuels will be required to deliver most of the emissions reductions from some sections of road transport fuels to 2050.

The response says that there has been a lack of clear vision in terms of policy with respect to fuels, which needs to be resolved. It is the view of LowCVP members that a range of technologies, which continue to include liquid and gaseous fuels will be required.

The submission says that carbon intensity should be measured based on the full life-cycle emissions of the fuel. Broad criteria should be applied to ensure the long term sustainability of the feedstock. However, LowCVP members believe that these sustainability measures must be applied equally to all uses of biomass, not just biofuels used in transport.

The LowCVP believes that Government support will be necessary to commercialise advanced fuel technologies and that it's critical that the Government sets out its vision for fuels and that those policies and support mechanisms are signalled in advance and remain stable to create the right climate for investment.
