Secretary of State for Transport, Alistair Darling, has launched a colour-coded 'ecolabel' for new cars at the LowCVP Annual Conference at the Heritage Motor Centre, Gaydon, Warwickshire.

To a packed house comprising over 250 delegates and 40 members of the media, Alistair Darling welcomed the Partnership's work in agreeing the new label and the motor industry's role in introducing it on a comprehensive, voluntary basis.

The LowCVP Conference and the Heritage Motor Centre's launch of the 'Green by Design' exhibition of environmental road transport  also attracted a large temporary collection of cleaner vehicles and technologies. The Secretary of State arrived at the conference on a hydrogen fuel cell bus on loan from Transport for London.

Speakers in the morning session represented an environment group, a 'think-tank' and the oil and motor industries. A video address, prepared especially for the conference, was delivered by Bill Ford, chairman and chief executive of the Ford Motor Company.

A delegate from a parallel event for children of school age also addressed the conference at the end of the morning session and was later introduced to the Secretary of State.

In addition to Alistair Darling's keynote speech, the afternoon included a series of workshops enabling delegates to feedback into the Government's current consultation on the Climate Change Programme.

Copies of the conference presentations are available from the LowCVP Secretariat and will also be uploaded to the web-site shortly.
