LowCVP announces Low Carbon Champions, Community Challenge winners and other news at Annual Conference & Awards Dinner

The LowCVP has announced the winners of the inaugural Low Carbon Champions Awards as well as the successful entrants in the LowCVP/EST Community Challenge amongst a raft of other announcements at its Annual Conference and Awards Dinner now under way at Twickenham Stadium in West London. Also announced at the Conference is the launch of the LowCVP's HGV Technology Challenge and a joint LowCVP/SMMT/ISBA report on best practice principles for 'green' marketing.

In the leading environmental transport event of the year, the LowCVP Conference and Awards Dinner 2010 has been attended by a total of 350 people over a day and a half.

This year’s conference featured Transport Minister Norman Baker, who delivered the first major speech on low carbon transport by the new coalition Government.

Inaugural LowCVP Low Carbon Champions Awards
The first ever LowCVP Low Carbon Champions Awards drew in more than 50 high quality entries. A total of 22 companies were honoured for their work in reducing CO2 emissions across the board, including biofuels suppliers, car-share social enterprises, bus operators, commercial vehicle manufacturers and EV power train designers. Winners of the LowCVP Low Carbon Community Challenge
Grassroots community projects for low carbon transport were celebrated at a national awards ceremony – and given funding to help them continue. Seven innovative solutions to greener transport at community level are to share £20,000 prize money to support their work. The Low Carbon Community Challenge has been coordinated by the LowCVP in partnership with the Energy Saving Trust. Click here for press release.

Launch of the LowCVP HGV Technology Challenge
Spin-out companies and start-ups are being offered the chance to showcase their innovative low carbon vehicle solutions to the freight sector. The LowCVP has launched a search to find new low carbon technologies for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). In the UK, almost three-quarters of all goods are moved by road, creating 5% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions. The winners will have the unique opportunity to showcase their products and services to truck manufacturers, component suppliers and major fleet operators. Click here for press release.

New Guidance for Advertisers on Environmental Claims for Vehicles
LowCVP, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) and ISBA (the Voice of British Advertisers), have joined forces to launch best practice principles for environmental claims in marketing aimed at consumers. The principles provide a framework and reference point for the automotive companies and their marketing agencies, when developing environmental messages used in advertising and other marketing communications, including press releases and websites. Winners of the What Car? Green Car Awards
The new Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI 105 Bluemotion 5dr has been named Green Car of the Year at the What Car? Green Awards, held in association with the LowCVP Low Carbon Champions Awards Dinner last night. The Golf was also named best Green Small Family Car and beat eight other category winners to the overall Green Car of the Year title.

New Report on Sustainability of UK Biofuels
The Renewable Fuels Agency published its second Annual Report examining the sustainability of biofuels used in the UK, as part of the Renewable Transport Fleet Obligation (RTFO).

Transport for London also unveiled the results of its extensive hybrid bus trials.
