Latest energy statistics show increased demand for fossil fuels

The latest DTI energy statistics show that fossil fuel demand increased in 2005, leading to a rise in carbon dioxide emissions of 0.25 per cent.

Total UK energy consumption in 2005 increased by 0.5 per cent with oil consumption in the UK rising by 2 per cent to 82 million tonnes of oil equivalent. The majority of this, 71 per cent, was consumed in the transport sector.

Between 1990 and 2005 energy consumption rose by 12.3 million tonnes of oil equivalent. The transport sector consumed 22% more energy over this period, while domestic sector consumption grew by over 15%. Industrial demand fell by nearly 15%.  

Published alongside the Energy Statistics is 'Energy -its impact on the environment and society'. First published in July 2002, it was re-released in 2005, setting out the key social and environmental consequences of the production and use of energy. It outlines the key policy challenges that are now being faced.
