The John Lewis Partnership has pledged to revolutionise its 500-strong fleet of delivery trucks, turning its current diesel lorries into biomethane vehicles by 2028. The pledge was made as part of the Government-initiated Green GB Week, under which EDF Energy and Royal Mail were among those also making road transport-related commitments.

According to the Government's website, John Lewis's transition will reduce fleet emissions by more than 80% and save more than 49,000 tonnes of CO2 annually – equivalent to the carbon footprint of more than 6,000 UK households.

John Lewis and Waitrose have been early adopters of transport fuelled by compressed natural gas (CNG) and are currently exploring and trialling the economic and environmental benefits of switching from diesel to low carbon biomethane.

Commenting on the new pledge, John Lewis Partnership’s General Manager of Central Transport (and a LowCVP Board member) Justin Laney said: “We have been pioneering the adoption of long-distance biomethane trucks in the UK and scaling this up to our entire heavy truck fleet will deliver significant environmental and operational benefits.

"Five biomethane trucks produce the same emissions as one diesel lorry and they are also much quieter, helping reduce not only greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution but also noise pollution in our cities.”

Meanwhile, EDF Energy, the UK’s largest producer of low carbon electricity and the biggest supplier of electricity by volume in Great Britain, has committed to electrifying its own fleet, currently around 1,500 vehicles, by 2030, double the national objective set by the government by that same deadline and saving up to 45.5 metric tonnes of CO2 a year as a result.

Royal Mail also committed to invest in existing and new technologies and to trialling low or zero emission vehicles, to reduce its emissions by 20 per cent by 2020–21, compared with a 2004–05 baseline.

Royal Mail, EDF Energy and John Lewis are among 50 companies to feature on the 'Pledge Wall' set up for Green GB Week, joining the likes of Amazon, Deloitte, Kingfisher, Royal Mail and HSBC.
