John Kerry promises boost for efficient, low carbon vehicles

US Presidential candidate John Kerry has promised that, if elected, he will act to cut American dependence on imported oil by encouraging investment in more efficient technologies and alternative fuels.

The policy is driven by strategic security rather than environmental concerns. According to Kerry, US dependence on Middle East oil is putting the country's national security at risk.

Kerry's campaign web-site says that his administration "will put America on the path towards energy independence and harness the full force of American optimism and ingenuity to invest in new technologies and alternative fuels, create tax incentives that help automakers produce more fuel efficient cars, and reward the consumers who buy them."
