IKEA's UK car fleet goes hybrid

Ikea is switching all of its UK company-car fleet to hybrid vehicles in a pilot project which could lead to a company-wide change.

The Swedish company will swap its existing Skoda cars for Honda Civic hybrids by 2008 in a  UK-only test run for a similar shift in other countries.  Considering Ikea's economic power, both in the UK and globally, this change should help to give a significant boost to the already expanding market for alternative fuel vehicles.

Honda will supply 50 Civic hybrids this year, and a further 20 in 2008.   Although Honda recently announced that it would cease production of the hybrid version of the Accord as a result of poor US sales, its hybrid Civics are reported to be selling well, and the firm is also developing a smaller hybrid car.
