The International Energy Agency says that if international energy policies remain unchanged, world energy demand and carbon dioxide emissions will rise by over 50% between now and 2030.

Under a 'World Alternative Policy Scenario' - including measures such as those agreed by the G8 countries this year - emissions will still rise by around 30%, according to the World Energy Outlook 2005.

The Paris-based agency says that while fossil-based energy resources are adequate to meet demand and will supply about 80% of the projected increase, massive investment will be required to bring this energy to consumers.

William Ramsay, Deputy Executive Director of the IEA said: “These projected trends have important implications and lead to a future that is not sustainable – from an energy-security or environmental perspective. We must change these outcomes and get the planet onto a sustainable energy path,”
