Hybrid Prius sales top 250,000

According to Toyota, sales of the petrol-electric hybrid Prius model have passed a quarter of a million. The company report particularly strong demand since the launch of the second generation model which went on sale in the UK in January 2004.

So far in 2004, almost 1400 Prius vehicles have been sold in the UK, while for the whole of Europe sales are expected to reach 8,500 this year.

For 2005, Toyota have set their sales target at 15,000 units for Europe, while an increase in production capacity will allow 180,000 cars to be sold worldwide.

The Toyota Prius was recently named 'Car of the Year' by a large panel of European motoring journalists.
