Hertz, the leading vehicle rental agency is to add a city car club arm to its UK operations. The company intends to extend this approach to mainland Europe and the United States in the next few months. Another vehicle rental agency, Avis, closed down its own car club, Urbigo, two years ago after poor subscription to the service.

A Hertz spokesman said: “Car sharing from Hertz will be an environmentally friendly program that gives members access to a self-service fleet spread throughout an area local to them. We will deploy leading-edge technology to make the entire rental process as easy and customer-friendly as possible."

Hertz previously collaborated with the UK car club Whizz Go by offering WhizzGo members preferential rates on rental vehicles.

The move by Hertz follows the establishment in the early summer of a car club in Berlin by the German car rental company Sixt.
