Half of all car buyers will check emissions levels before car purchase - RAC survey

According to the RAC's 2006 'Report on Motoring', 50% of all motorists say they will check emissions levels before purchasing their next vehicle. The study also concludes that most motorists need a discernible financial benefit to 'go green'.

The report concludes that motorists are now prepared to accept strong - the RAC use the term 'draconian' - measures to tackle the key issues of congestion, environmental pollution and road safety. It says that they are prepared to 'do a deal' with Government on road pricing but their support depends on the terms offered in return; for example, concessions on motoring taxes and improvements in public transport and the road network.

The RAC report concludes that if the Government is serious about hitting a 'tipping point' on greener motoring and really changing behaviour, then it needs to more fully investigate motorists' buying decisions. It proposes improved, long-term incentives to encourage the purchase of greener cars, as well as the scrapping of more polluting vehicles. It also suggests the extension of the colour-coded labelling scheme to the second-hand car market.
