Swedish sales of 'greener' and alternative fuel cars rose by 49% in 2007 largely thanks to financial incentives from the state, Sweden's Environmental Protection Agency has said.

55,000 new low emission cars were registered in Sweden in 2007 accounting for 18% of the total Swedish car market. The most common of those sold run on ethanol, the Swedish EPA reported.

In April 2007, the Swedish Government introduced a rebate of 10,000 kronor ($1,553) for private individuals who buy a new car which produces lower emissions, runs on biofuels or is a hybrid.
