'Green' Sat-nav can cut carbon emissions

A new satellite navigation system has been designed to select the most efficient route to drive - as opposed to the fastest, or shortest. Early tests show that the system can cut average fuel use by over 8%.

The new system, developed by researchers at the Lund Institute of Technology in Sweden, plots the most fuel-efficient route by checking roads for traffic lights, junctions, speed limits and the likelihood of traffic jams.

The developers of the prototype system say that if digital maps of cities could be improved to include details of traffic behaviour, the system could make a significant impact on greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles.

The biggest problem in bringing the product to market is likely to be its cost. The researchers say that this problem can be overcome if enough drivers are recruited to volunteer their cars to provide live traffic flow data to feed into the system.
