Government plans to review Bus Service Operators Grant

The Department for Transport is planning to launch a new review of the bus subsidy system, including the Bus Service Operators Grant (BSOG) according to Local Transport Today (LTT).

The proposal for a new review is included in the DfT's business plan for 2006/7-2008/9, according to LTT. The work will feed in to next year's spending review. The DfT's plan says that one of the Department's objectives is to "review bus subsidy and propose changes that will support patronage growth."

The BSOG has been criticised for standing in the way of public policy objectives. For example, the way it is currently structured reduces the incentive for bus operators to conserve fuel and move to more efficient, low carbon vehicles and associated technologies.
