Government funded electric car chargepoints to be 'smart' by July 2019

The Government has announced that all funded chargepoints for electric vehicle use will have to use innovative 'smart' technology from July 2019 in order that they can be remotely accessed and capable of receiving, interpreting and reacting to a signal. Smart charging has the potential to reduce high peaks of electricity demand, encourage off-peak charging and minimise the costs of electric vehicles to the electricity system.
The announcement fulfills a commitment made in the Road to Zero Strategy which was published earlier this year.
The Government has also announced that grants to install chargepoints at home and in the workplace will be maintained at their current level of up to £500.
The Government says that it has already supported the installation of over 100,000 home chargepoints. The Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme has supported the delivery of domestic chargepoints to consumers since 2014 and has delivered over 60,000 grants to date.
The LowCVP is coordinating the work of the EV Energy Taskforce (also announced as part of the Road to Zero Strategy) which is working to ensure that the UK energy system is ready for, and able to capitalise on the opportunities presented by, the widespread uptake of electric vehicles. The introduction of 'smart' charging is expected to be a key 'building block' towards maximising the opportunities for the energy system resulting from the wider uptake of EVs.
