Norman Baker, the transport minister, has announced the winners of the £15m Green Bus Fund which will support bus operators and local authorities with the introduction of around 170 hybrid and electric vehicles. The vehicles are expected to begin operating in March 2012.

The first round of the competition saw 24 bidders share £30 million, which is helping to support the purchase of around 350 new low carbon buses. The second round of funding will help towards the additional upfront cost of buying low carbon buses and provides the capital investment required to bring down costs for operators.

The biggest recipients of funding will be Transport for London with £5m support for 54 buses, followed by Stagecoach North East with £2.225m(26 buses) and Stagecoach Yorkshire with £1.882m (21).

Norman Baker said: “This sector has tremendous potential to reduce the impact of road transport on climate change. The Green Bus Fund is vital to unlocking this potential and will also stimulate a growing market."

The LowCVP provided input to the Department for Transport in the design and development of both the Green Bus Funds.
