The Government has announced new funding to enable access to charging for people without off-street facilities, to transition NHS fleets and create thousands of chargepoints at business depots.
The £63m package includes £25 million for local authorities to expand access to cheaper at-home charging, such as through the installation of innovative cross-pavement technology to allow cables to run safely beneath pavements.
There is also £30m funding to support the installation of charging facilities at business depots. The Government has since announced that the Energy Saving Trust and Cenex will facilitate the delivery of the scheme which is expected to support the installation of over 3,000 van and 200 HGV chargepoints, aiming to cut business costs, boost operational efficiency and accelerate the adoption of zero emission vehicles.
The scheme, which has already opened, will provide targeted financial support to assist businesses and local authorities in installing the necessary infrastructure for charging zero emission vans, HGVs and coaches.
Eligible businesses will have the opportunity to claim reimbursement of up to 75% of the costs associated with charger procurement and installation, with a cap of £1m per applicant applicable to all sites. The grant will remain available until the allocated funding has been exhausted or until 28 November 2025, whichever occurs first.
The funding also includes £8 million to support the NHS in the electrification of ambulances and medical fleets across over 200 NHS sites.
As part of the same package, the Government also announced plans to modernise EV charging signage on major roads. Larger EV charging hubs will be signposted from major A-roads for the first time.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said: "We are making it easier and cheaper to own an electric vehicle. We know access to charging is a barrier for people thinking of making the switch, so we are tackling that head on so that everyone - whether or not they have a driveway - can access the benefits of going electric."
Vicky Read, CEO of ChargeUK said: "With 82,000 public chargepoints already installed across the UK, this positive action on strategic road signage will help more drivers see the extensive charging network that’s rapidly being built across the country. This has been a priority for our industry and will boost consumer confidence in making the switch to electric vehicles."
