The German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, has announced plans to double the nation's energy efficiency by 2020 compared with 1990 levels.

ENDS reports that the programme was agreed at an "energy summit" with power firms. The programme includes the introduction of CO2-based taxes on road vehicles.

Also included in the plans are a revision of Germany’s combined heat and power law and  previously announced measures, such as government support for improving energy efficiency in old buildings.
