Geneva Motor Show features world firsts in new 'Green Pavilion'

This year's Geneva Motor show, which ran from 3 to 13 March, again featured a significant proportion of 'green' vehicles, including several world firsts. In addition to the individual exhibitors, a 3,000-sq. metre Green Pavilion showcased the latest developments from 36 exhibitors presenting up to 17 world premieres.

Low carbon highlights from the show included:

- The Toyota Yaris Hybrid Synergy Drive Concept which made its world debut at the show. The car maker says the Yaris HSD will bring Hybrid Synergy Drive to the supermini B-segment, which accounts for the largest share of the European new car market.

- Land Rover showed its Range_e plug in hybrid development model. The Range_e has an advanced plug-in hybrid diesel-electric powertrain that Land Rover expects to make available in future production models. A full recharge from a standard domestic power supply can be accomplished in around four hours

- Ford Motor Compnay presented its new generation electric Ford Focus, first shown last year, together with a plug-in hybrid and a full hybrid version of its C-MAX compact people carrier. In its commercial vehicle range, the Transit Connect Electric Van - a pure electric-powered version of the Transit Connect - was also be on show.

 - French car maker Renault exhibited the Kangoo Van Maxi ZE, an extended version of Kangoo Van ZE, a compact electric van at the show. Also on display was the concept ZOE Preview - an electric Clio-sized compact and the electric Fluence ZE saloon model, both expected to be available by mid-2012.

 - Volvo launched the world's first diesel plug-in hybrid, the Volvo V60 with carbon dioxide emissions claimed to be below 50 g/km by the Swedish firm. The plug-in hybrid is expected to be on the market in 2012.

- The Hyundai i40, the car maker's Europe-specific D-segment model, was on show with a 1.7-litre ‘U-II’ diesel engine noted as emitting 113 g/km of CO2, reportedly a best-in-class figure.

- The Rolls-Royce 102 EX Phantom Experimental Electric which houses a fully electric drivetrain was also launched in Geneva.
