General Motors has announced that it aims to ensure that each car and light truck it produces will at least equal the fuel economy of its rivals. GM's head of product development said the company aims to be the most fuel efficient in every segment even at the expense of performance or cost.

According to a report in the Financial Times, GM is reacting, in particular, to concern among US drivers about petrol prices and oil imports.

Bob Lutz, GM's vice chairman and head of product development told the FT: "We are setting ourselves the goal of being the fuel efficiency leader in every category in which we compete."

"Cars have become so powerful that we can trade off a little bit of performance if it gets you fuel economy."

GM's competitor, Ford, recently announced it would spend £1bn over six years to make its European vehicles more fuel-efficient.
