G8 summit transport emissions to be 'offset'

Transport and other sources of carbon dioxide emissions relating to this Summer's G8 Summit in Edinburgh are to be 'offset' through investments in sustainable energy projects in Africa.

Total emissions associated with the G8 Presidency will amount to 4,000tCO2, which is comparable with the emissions generated by the electricity and gas used in 800 average homes over a year.

The carbon offset investments - worth around £50,000 - will be administered through the Clean Development Mechanism according to a joint announcement by Defra and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

The Foreign Office's strategy for cutting emissions associated with the July 6-8 event includes using high occupancy and clean-fuelled vehicles to transport delegates and encouraging media and NGOs to use buses.
