Ford Motor Company unveiled the new electric Ford Focus at the 2011 Consumer Electronics Show in January. It will be the company's first all-electric mainstream passenger car and one of the five new electrified vehicles that the  carmaker will deliver by 2013 in North American and European markets.

Ford Focus Electric will be powered by a 100-kilowatt electric-motor with a 23 kWh battery which produces 123-hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. Ford says that the Focus Electric can travel at a top speed of 84 mph and has a total range of up to 100 miles on a single charge.

"Focus Electric is the flagship of our new family of electrified vehicles, showcasing our commitment to offer consumers choice when it comes to fuel-efficient or fuel-free vehicles", said Derrick Kuzak, Ford Group Vice President for Global Product Development.

Both Focus gasoline and electric variants to be sold in North America will be built at Ford's Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan with production powered in part by one of the largest solar energy generator systems in the state. For European markets, a decision on where the Focus Electric will be built is still being finalised.

The Focus will go head-to-head with the Nissan Leaf and GM's Volt with Ford promising a miles-per-gallon equivalent higher than that of the Volt and a charge time of three to four hours, half the time required by the Nissan Leaf.
