Ford introduces US scheme for car owners to 'offset' carbon emissions

Ford Motor Company has announced a US-based scheme giving vehicle owners the opportunity to offset the climate impact of their driving. The "Greener Miles" programme will offset carbon emissions by investing in renewable energy projects. Ford also plans to introduce an on-line eco-driving training programme in the US.

Through the offset scheme, drivers can calculate the amount of CO2 emissions they generate in one year of driving. They then have the opportunity to purchase an offset that supports the production of renewable energy from wind or dairy farm methane.

The cost of offsetting the carbon emissions from a typical vehicle ranges from $29.95 to $79.95 a year, depending on the type of vehicle and the distance travelled.

In addition to the Greener Miles offset program, Ford will shortly launch an Eco-driving online training program through Ford’s web site (www.ford.com). Visitors to the site will learn tips for operating and maintaining their vehicles, and other ways of conserving fuel, saving money at the pumps and reducing their vehicle's emissions.
