The UK's first Bio-LNG filling station has been opened by Gasrec in Daventry by Transport Minister Norman Baker. It will allow gas-powered or dual-fuel trucks to use Bio-LNG and will operate in a similar way to a traditional filling station.

According to a report in Business Green, the facility's developer Gasrec says the fuel can cut fuel costs by up to 30 per cent and produces at least 20 per cent lower emissions compared to diesel equivalents, while almost eliminating nitrogen oxides and particulate emissions. Last year, a report by consultants Ricardo-AEA for the LowCVP and the Transport KTN found that running the UK's HGV fleets on Bio-LNG could reduce haulage emissions by up to two thirds.

The site at Daventry can serve as many as 250 gas-powered or dual-fuel HGVs a day and is the first of a national Bio-LNG refuelling network which Gasrec says is planned to be up and running by the end of 2015. The network is planned to be located near highway junctions allowing 85% of the UK’s HGV population to access at least one location within four hours’ drive.

Norman Baker said: said: “The innovation shown by Gasrec and its partners in projects like this can help the UK meet its ambitious carbon reduction targets while creating green jobs to build the economy. This announcement represents a significant step towards achieving carbon and air quality benefits and I am pleased that demonstration fleets from the Government’s Low Carbon Truck Demonstration Trial will be refuelling from this site."
