Fiat has announced that it will extend the introduction of its stop-start system as an option on both gasoline and diesel versions of the 500 and Panda minicars and the Grande Punto small car. The Italian carmaker joins PSA Peugeot Citroen in launching the fuel saving system across its mainstream models.

Fiat Automobiles CEO Lorenzo Sistino said: "In October we will begin adding stop-start to the 1.2-liter gasoline 500."   He added that Fiat will charge customers less than an additional €400 for a Fiat 500 with stop-start and an automated manual transmission.

Magneti Marelli, Fiat Group's component-making arm are to supply the technology. Ultimately, Fiat anticipates it will install stop-start systems as standard equipment to meet the increasingly tough CO2 emission regulations. Fiat's head of prototype testing Maurizio Barantini said there are bigger gains to be made with petrol engines because diesels are more fuel efficient to begin with. He said the improvement with stop-start on the 1.2-litre engine is around 4 per cent, with the 1.3-litre turbodiesel around 2.5 per cent.
