European production of biofuel rises sharply

The production of biofuels is rising rapidly in Europe according to a recent market survey. The output of biodiesel - easily the dominant biofuel - increased by 26% in 2003.

Even at this rate of growth, however, the Eurobserver Biofuels Barometer survey estimates that Europe will be producing only 11 million tonnes oil equivalent (Mtoe) of biofuels by 2010, well short of
earlier European targets.

Nevertheless, the European Commission has recently floated plans for even higher targets for biofuels -and other alternative transport fuels - earlier following a report by a European grouping on alternative fuel prospects (see link below).

In July, the LowCVP contributed views to the UK's own consultation on biofuels.
