EU members say biofuels target beyond reach without increased blending limit

Sweden and Spain have told the European Commission that the EU can't achieve its target for biofuels use in transport without doubling the legal limit on blending ethanol into petrol to 10%.

ENDS reports that the Commission is due to review current EU road fuel quality specifications by the end of this year and is already consulting stakeholders.

The EU biofuels directive sets a non-binding target for biofuels to make up 5.75% of petrol and diesel by 2010. The aim of the target is to limit road transport's contribution to climate change.

The EC recently launched a stakeholder consultation process for revising the fuel quality directive. The EU executive is expected to hold a second stakeholder conference after the summer break.
