EU funding secures more hydrogen buses for London

Transport for London has secured €5.67m European Commission funding to acquire three additional hydrogen hybrid fuel cell buses, allowing the operator to run an entire London bus route with hydrogen-powered vehicles.

The funds are part of the EU's Cleaner Hydrogen in Cities plan. The three extra buses will join five others due to begin running on route RV1 later this year. TfL says that the eight vehicles should all be in operation by the end of 2011 with the trial now running for four years, a year longer than originally planned.

Wrightbus will supply the buses to the project while ISE Corporation will maintain them with Ballard supplying the fuel cells and Air Products the hydrogen.

Chair of the London Hydrogen Partnership and Deputy Mayor for Policing Kit Malthouse, said: "This is knockout news for the Mayor's plans to cleanse the air we breathe every day. Hydrogen vehicles emit only water from their exhaust pipe, unlike the fumes and pollution petrol and diesel engines spew forth."
