EU fail to reach solution on phase-out of cadmium batteries

The EU have failed to conclude discussions over an amendment to a Directive that would allow electric cars to continue using cadmium batteries until 2008.

The ELV Directive (2000) requires cadmium batteries to be phased out by this year.

According to a report in ENDS, a regulatory committee has failed to agree on the European Commission's proposal for an extension. Some member states want to keep the existing ban date while others instead want an extension until 2010.

ENDS reports that a Commission source expressed confidence that the amendments would be agreed, claiming that the extension was supported by a recent Commission sustainable battery (Subat) study.

The Subat study concluded that replacements for cadmium batteries are available but not yet ready for large-scale production.
