EU Enterprise Commissioner calls for 'blueprint' to bind together enterprise and environment policies

The EU Enterprise Commissioner, Gunter Verheugen, made a significant intervention into the environmental policy debate calling for a ten-point blueprint to draw together policies for environmental sustainability, competitiveness and energy security.

ENDS reports that Mr Verhuegen set out his proposals in a letter to the Commission President Jose Barroso.

In one proposal, the Enterprise Commissioner said that private cars should be brought within the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) which, itself, must otherwise be strengthened and extended.

Mr Verheugen also calls for an ambitious industrial policy to help develop and bring environmental technologies to market and "make Europe the front-runner in environmental industries".

According to ENDS, the European Parliament’s Green group called it a "bizarre outburst" and said it would call for a plenary debate on the letter and its implications.
