Electric vehicle (EV) charge point provider Elektromotive is to create the UK’s largest pay-as-you-go network of public access charging stations for EVs.

Announcing a new joint venture with Charge Your Car (North) the company is set to create a 10,000-point public access pay-as-you-go network across the UK. Any manufacturer utilising the industry-standard Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) will be able to use the open source national network.

Elektromotive already manages about 3,000 charge points across the UK, while Charge Your Car (North) operates 400 public charge points around Newcastle. Calvey Taylor-Haw, Founder and Managing Director of Elektromotive said: “Charge-point owners in the public and private sectors have a way to promote their charge-points, generate revenue and manage their infrastructure. EV drivers have a single access point for recharging that is quick, easy and affordable.”

In related news, major European industry bodies for Automotive(ACEA), suppliers (CLEPA) and electricity (EURELECTRIC) sectors have jointly agreed on the need for a single harmonised plug system for recharging electric vehicles.

According to the UK's Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) the three associations have strongly urged the relevant European Institutions, and in particular the European Commission, to take the necessary steps to ensure a single solution for the charging of electric vehicles in Europe, stressing the urgency involved before wide-scale roll-out across Europe starts.

In May Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daimler, Ford, General Motors, Porsche and Volkswagen agreed to support a harmonised single-port fast charging approach – called DC-fast charging with a Combined Charging System – for use on electric vehicles in Europe and the United States.
