Eco-driving to be part of driving tests from 2008

From 2008, changes to the driving test will mean that UK drivers will have to show that they can drive in a fuel-efficient, as well as a safe, way.

People learning to drive will be taught tips on eco-driving such as accelerating and braking less strongly and changing gears sooner. They will be assessed on their abilities as part of the practical exam.

According to The Observer, (now former)Transport Secretary Alistair Darling said that candidates would not pass or fail on eco-driving, but that he wanted it "to become as much a part of learning to drive as the three-point turn or checking your mirrors. Small changes like this can make a big difference to the effect drivers have on the environment."

The move follows similar initiatives the Netherlands, where the 'New Driving' programme says that eco-drivers can potentially cut fuel use by up to 30%.
