EC launches public consultation on road transport CO2 reduction

The European Commission has launched an eight-week internet-based public consultation on how the EU should further reduce car CO2 emissions and improve fuel efficiency.

The introduction to the consultation states that transport is the only sector in the EU from which CO2 emissions are increasing.

The consultation questionnaire looks at car purchasing behaviour, awareness of the climate change impact of road transport, and how to reduce CO2 emissions from passenger cars and light commercial vehicles (e.g. delivery vans), and other issues.

In parallel to the public consultation, other relevant organisations (such as automobile and fuel industries and NGOs) are being consulted in the context of a stakeholder working group set up under the second phase of the European Climate Change Programme.

In a separate development, the European Commission has launched the first EU-wide publicity campaign on climate change, telling citizens: “you control climate change”.  The overall 4.7m Euro campaign will involve national campaigns launched in all 25 EU member states aimed at raising awareness and changing behaviour.

A new multi-lingual website has been launched to support the campaign (see link below).
