Two separate Early Day Motions were introduced in May - for biofuels and LPG - to measure and encourage parliamentary support for these alternative fuels.
On 17 May, a Conservative-sponsored EDM expressed support for biofuels, expressing the view:
"That this House recognises the important role biofuels can play in meeting Britain's Kyoto commitments while providing farmers with a valuable new market for crops; regrets that the Government has done virtually nothing to promote the real contribution that the countryside can make to renewable energy through biofuels; and calls on the Government to stimulate a viable UK industry in biofuels through duty rebates and the Renewable Fuel Obligation."
A second motion, also initiated by Conservative MP's, stated:
"That this House believes that the fact that the increasing number of vehicles in the United Kingdom propelled by liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is a sign that the public increasingly recognises the environmental and health benefits of liquefied petroleum gas over petrol and diesel; notes the significant contribution that a switch to LPG from diesel would make to improving air quality and from petrol to LPG would make to reducing carbon dioxide emissions; believes that all new or refurbished filling stations should be encouraged to provide liquefied petroleum gas refuelling facilities; and calls on the Government to take measures to encourage the take-up of cleaner, greener fuels and the development of more efficient, environmentally friendly vehicles."
