Overall primary demand for oil products rose 10% in the second quarter of 2004 compared with the same period a year earlier, according to the DTI's latest energy statistics.

On a seasonally adjusted and temperature corrected basis, the rise was less steep at 1.4%.

Overall energy demand increased 0.4% in the period.

Within the oil sector, there were significant rises in deliveries of diesel (6.7%) and aviation fuel (3.6%) while deliveries of gasoline fell by 6.4%.

Despite a fall in UK production and a rise in consumption, the UK continues to export more oil than it imports.
