DTI and Defra are joining forces to create a new 'think tank' that will look at how the UK can benefit from the opportunities for business presented by the need to mitigate and adapt to climate change and other environmental threats.

The Environment Secretary, David Miliband, and Trade and Industry Secretary, Alistair Darling, will chair the new Commission on Environmental Markets and Economic Performance.

The Commission will be made up of representatives from business, NGOs, academia, trade unions and public sector organisations. It will report to Government in Spring 2007.

Mr Miliband said: "Climate change is a serious threat but also a business opportunity.
There are jobs and wealth to be created in reducing greenhouse gas missions, as there are in tackling other environmental problems."

The Commission will look at trends in world markets for environmental products and services, and will identify areas in which the UK may have a competitive advantage. It will also look at how policy and regulations could help innovation.
