DfT issues discussion paper to help decide what will succeed Voluntary Agreements

Thu 14 September 2006 View all news

The Department for Transport has issued an 'informal discussion paper' to seek views on what should replace the existing Voluntary Agreements between the European Commission and vehicle manufacturer associations on new car fuel efficiency when they expire in 2008/09.

The initial consultation is intended to gauge stakeholder views and inform policy development. The Government intends to hold a full public consultation on this topic. The timing and content of the public consultation will be dependent on the content of the Commission's communication on their CO2 strategy for cars, expected by the end of 2006.

The Government wishes to engage proactively with the Commission ahead of their planned communication to help shape the direction of policy to ensure that any future preferred option is right for British business and society.
