Funds from the DfT's £5m Clean Bus Technology Fund have been awarded to eleven areas of England to fit emissions reduction technologies to 400 buses.

The £5 million fund provides support to local authorities which can demonstrate how additional funding improves air quality, offers value for money and the ability to deliver retrofit technologies.

More than 30 authorities applied and successful schemes proposed a mix of previously adopted equipment together with newer technologies, including hybrid flywheel which can deliver up to 20% reductions in fuel consumption and emissions.

Transport minister Norman Baker said: “The funding we are providing will help clean up emissions from older buses in some of our most polluted urban areas, with all the health benefits. This will lead to improvements in air quality on some of our most polluted streets, as well as helping to stimulate jobs and growth in the bus and environmental technology industries.”

The DfT has already provided £5 million of funding, match-funded by the Mayor of London, to fit 900 London buses with exhaust after-treatment technology.
