DfT announces first phase of £20m programme to procure low carbon vans

The Department for Transport has issued a procurement notice for the supply of 150-200 low carbon and all-electric vans in the first phase of procurements under the £20m Low Carbon Vehicle Procurement Programme, which is managed by Cenex on behalf of the Department.

Cenex anticipates that around two thirds of the vehicles procured could be lower-carbon vans and a third all-electric vans. The vehicles will be placed with public sector fleets participating in the programme.

Cenex hosted an event, held at the SMMT on 8 July, which was intended to provide information to potential technology and vehicle providers about the procurement process. Cenex says that the procurement programme aims to deliver a vehicle offering significant improvement in carbon emissions over current best-in-class models. Currently there is no lower-carbon van model available on the mass UK market, despite the fact that technology options exist for improving vans’ carbon performance.

Cenex is seeking firms with the capability to produce either low carbon or all-electric vans to bid for the supply of up to 200 vans for a first phase and then "significantly larger numbers" in phase two.

The deadline for expressions of interest to Cenex is Friday 12 September 2008.
